The band formed when its five members met at a barbecue in Santa Barbara. They were initially known as Deathride but decided to change their name to evoke more originality. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2003 through Roadrunner Records and soon took the number 17 spot on the Heatseekers chart. However, response to the album was mainly negative, and the group decided to change up their sound after these reviews.
Their second album, The Fury of Our Maker’s Hand, was recorded in isolation in El Paso, TX, allowing the band members to home in on their sound. It sold over 10,000 copies in the first week of its release and was followed by a tour of the U.S.
