Although Duluth has a rich history of professional orchestras reaching as far back as 1883, the origins of the Duluth Civic Orchestra lie in a carriage house during 1931, when Alphin Flaaten, a professional music instructor, started teaching there. The Civic Orchestra's first performance was on May 2, 1932, under the conductorship of Walter Lange. The board was encouraged by the enthusiasm of the citizenry. Paul Lemay, principal violist and assistant conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony, accepted the position as the first full-time conductor. His debut with the Duluth Civic Orchestra was December 26, 1932, and shortly after, under Abe Miller's leadership, the Duluth Symphony Association came into existence. To commemorate the two-port cities' long cultural and economic link, in the 1974-75 season the Orchestra was renamed to Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra.
