Earth is a five-piece psychedelic rock band from Washington known for their minimalist brand of rock music that incorporates elements from jazz, folk and country music. The members are Tristan Jemsek, Bill Herzog, Don McGreevy, Adrienne Davies and Dylan Carlson.
Earth was founded by Carlson in Olympia in 1989, taking its name from a reference to Black Sabbath’s early career. The group spent a number of years refining their signature sound that involved heavy distortion, droning and extended trance-like song structure. In 1993 the band released their debut album Earth 2: Special Low-Frequency Version, which garnered widespread critical acclaim and remains one of their most well-known releases still today. Earth 2: Special Low-Frequency Version has been largely credited by music historians with establishing the now-popular drone metal genre. Earth’s signature sound would prove a formative influence on later artists in psychedelic rock such as Tame Impala and Greta Van Fleet.
In the 2000s the band took a turn toward a more country rock-inspired sound, though retained a handful of psychedelic elements. Releases like The Bees Made Honey in the Lions’ Skull evolved Earth’s sound even further in this direction.
