After more than 12 years of dormancy, the franchise was reactivated for the 2015 season. The team played their entire 2015 and 2016 home games at Kermit Tipton Stadium before moving to the new William B. Greene Jr. Stadium in 2017. Tennessee State was an NCAA Division I Southern Conference (SoCon) football program before it discontinued its program. The program was revived in 2015 and played as an independent before returning to the SoCon in 2016.

The first football team at Tennessee State University was fielded in 1920. Navy blue and old gold were the school colors, which were chosen in 1911. Only five games were played that year, with two against local high schools included. Gene McMurray was hired as the head coach in 1932. During his 11 seasons at the helm of the Buckeyes, he posted the best winning percentage in Buc football history. During his time as head coach, the team won the Smoky Mountain Conference title in 1938 and became known as the "Buccaneers" (1935). From 1952 to 1956, the squad appeared in the Burley Bowl five times and went 3–2.

They won the Ohio Valley Conference Championship and defeated Louisiana Tech, led by quarterback Terry Bradshaw, in the Grantland Rice Bowl. Coach Mike Cavan's 1996 ETSU football squad went 10–3 and debuted in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, where they defeated Villanova.
