They represent a private Mennonite liberal arts university in Harrisonburg, Va. They play in the NCAA Division III in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) where they compete against other top schools such as Virginia Wesleyan University, Bridgewater College and the University of Lynchburg. Their mascot is HeRM (His Royal Majesty) the lion with their school colors being white, black and royal blue.

Even though the school was founded in 1917, the men's basketball team didn't take the court until 1966. The Royals joined the ODAC in 1976 and won the regular-season title for the first time in 1980. They reached the tournament final in 1983 and finished as runners-up. Tim Crawford and Leonard Dow were first-team all-conference selections in those seasons, respectively.

EMU earned its first NCAA Division III Tournament bid in 2010 and reached the Elite Eight. They finished the season with a 25-5 record and another regular-season conference title. They reached the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament. Watch the Royals fight for another tournament bid this season with Eastern Mennonite basketball tickets.
