Edo de Waart is a Dutch conductor who was born on June 1, 1941, in Amsterdam. He is an Artistic Partner of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Music Director of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and chief conductor of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic. In 1962, Edo de Waart studied oboe, piano, and conducting at the Sweelinck Conservatory and received his diploma.
He became an associate principal oboist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra the next year. De Waart has enjoyed considerable success as an opera conductor in major and numerous of the world's most renowned opera houses including at Bayreuth, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Opéra Bastille, and The Metropolitan Opera.
He is a well-known orchestral trainer who has worked on projects with talented young musicians at the Juilliard and Colburn schools, as well as the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara.
