El Gran Silencio was founded by Tony and Cano Hernandez in Monterrey in 1993. In their early years, they performed under the name La Zona del Silencio. The band made their first serious waves with their 1998 album Libres y Locos, which contained their well-known hit “Dormir Sonando.” A string of further hits, most notably “Chuntaro Style,” cemented their place as one of the leading rock artists in Mexico.
By the early 2010s, El Gran Silencio had made inroads with US audiences. Their growing popularity led to a number of festival appearances at prominent events like Machata Fest, Vive Latino and the Festival Internacional Cervantino. They have received widespread acclaim for their incorporation of traditional Mexican music styles such as vallenato, Norteno and cumbia.
