Since 2021, they have competed as a collegiate summer team within the Appalachian League. The Elizabethton River Riders play their home games out of the Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark, and their team colors are blue, yellow and white. They are managed by Brice Ballentine. 

The River Riders began as the Elizabethton Betsy Red Sox in 1937. They underwent several name changes in the decades that followed, becoming the Betsy Cubs, the Betsy Local and the Elizabethton Phils. In 1974, the team became the Elizabethton Twins, playing as the minor league affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. 

When the Appalachian League was converted into a collegiate summer league in 2021, the Elizabethton Twins became the Elizabethton River Riders, repopulating their roster with rising college athletes. They take their name from a reference to the nearby Watauga River, which runs adjacent to the Northeast Community Credit Union Ballpark.
