Paul was born in 1965 in Fort Kent and developed a love for music while playing in the school’s jazz band. During his time at Boston College, he encountered the work of Bob Dylan and began seriously considering a career in making folk music. 

Paul began playing the open mic circuit in and around the city of Boston, in particular making a name for himself at the renowned Nameless Coffeehouse in Cambridge. In 1989 he won the venue’s New Songwriter Award and soon began playing his first professional gigs. 

Shortly after graduation, Paul founded Black Wolf Records, through which he released his debut albums Am I Home and Urban Folksongs. His breakthrough exposure came in 1991 when he received the Boston Acoustic Underground Award and was featured on the popular Legacy II compilation album by Windham Hill Records. A star was born, and over the next decade, Paul’s work would earn him over a dozen Boston Music Awards, the highest honor for acoustic artists.
