Emperor was founded in Notodden in 1991, as the members had previously met performing together in the band Thou Shalt Suffer. They quickly gained a significant underground following for their demo tape Wrath of the Tyrant, which earned them a deal with Candlelight Records. They released their eponymous debut EP through the label in 1993, for which they earned widespread critical acclaim. 

Despite a number of legal troubles in the years that followed, the band went on to release their most well-known album In the Nightside Eclipse. In the Nightside Eclipse contained some of the band’s most highly regarded songs, such as “Inno a Satana” and “I Am the Black Wizards.” The album continues to be regarded as one of the most influential in the history of black metal and catapulted the band to worldwide fame.
