The black and gold Hornets play their home games in William L. White Auditorium and compete in NCAA Division II as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
The men's basketball program began in 1901 and joined the NCAA in 1991. Prior to that, the Hornets competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Emporia State won eight regular-season conference championships as an NAIA program. Gus Fish, a football and basketball standout for the Hornets, was one of the program's most successful coaches leading the Hornets to six of those titles and six appearances in the NAIA national tournament. The Hornets finished fourth in 1946 and 1970 under his direction. Ron Slaymaker, another Emporia State alumnus, took over in 1970 after Fish's lengthy tenure.
