Martin was born in 1960 on Long Island in New York and found a love for music watching his father perform as a drummer for The Buzz band.
Martin played in a handful of rock and punk bands while in high school, but found his first serious success in the mid-70s when he joined Stark Raving Mad. The band signed to Bearsville Records and worked extensively with producer Chris Nicks, Stevie Nicks’ brother.
Martin’s greatest successes, however, came in the late ‘80s when he formed the band Mr. Big with Paul Gilbert, Pat Torpey and Billy Sheehan. The group immediately met with widespread acclaim, and their self-titled debut album earned rave reviews from critics. They began touring alongside classic rock legends Rush and released several charting hits. In 1991 Mr. Big released “To Be With You,” a song Martin had written as a teenager. “To Be With You” was a number one hit in over a dozen countries, and remains Martin’s greatest claim to fame.
