When that deal fell through, he attended Howard University in Washington, DC, completing his studies in Musical Theater. He then spent time performing on stage before signing a songwriting deal through EMI. He collaborated with artists such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, Musiq Soulchild, and Jill Scott.

He released the album The Esoteric Movement in 2001 He continued working on songwriting, including contributing to DJ Jazzy Jeff’s 2002 album The Magnificent. Setting up his own Blue Erro Soul label – Erro is his nickname – he released The Vault, Vol. 1 in 2003, followed by The Vault, Vol. 1.5 in 2004. In 2007, he was nominated for a BET J Award. His 2009 album, Music Fan First, was critically acclaimed, earning him two Grammy Award nominations for Best Urban/Alternative Performance (one in 2009, one in 2010). His seventh album, Mister Nice Guy, released in 2011, reached Number 98 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and Number 14 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
