F*cked Up was founded in 2001 in Toronto, Ontario. In their early years, they developed a devoted following in the city’s underground punk scene, in particular, due to their experimental song structure and use of occult imagery. A series of successful demos got them signed to Jade Tree Records in 2006.
The following year F*cked Up went on their first European tour and made their television debut on MTV Live, earning rave reviews from publications like The New York Times. In 2008 the band released their album The Chemistry of Common Life, which received critical praise from Pitchfork, Alternative Press and The New Musical Express, among others. The group then greatly increased their exposure when in 2009 they won the coveted Polaris Music Prize.
