They are primarily known for playing a kind of Sufi devotional music popular in North India and Pakistan, known as Qawwali. The members are Abrar Hussain, Ali Shan, Salim Chishti, Laali Qalandar and Aminah and Tahir Qawwal.
Fanna-fi-allah was founded by Aminah and Tahir Qawwal in Nova Scotia in 2001. However, prototypes of the ensemble had performed since 1996. Tahir Qawwal had studied Indian classical music with the renowned Harjeet Singh as a teenager before converting to Islam. He went on to train in Qawwali in Pakistan under the likes of Sher Ali Khan and Rahet Fateh Ali Khan, among others.
Aminah Qawwal, an Oregon native, also studied with Rahet Fateh Ali Khan. In 2003 she became the first female tabla player to receive initiation into the Qawwali lineage. Aminah and Tahir Qawwal quickly earned acclaim for their performances with Fanna-fi-allah, many of which feature Sufi whirling dances. In 2005 the group released their heavily praised debut album, Annihilation Into the Infinite.
