The plot of the musical centers around two New Yorkers on a first date who are serenaded by concerned ghosts from their extended family. Winsberg, Weiner and Zachary wrote First Date together in the early 2010s after a string of comical romantic experiences. The musical premiered in Seattle at the ACT Theatre in 2012 before moving to the Longacre Theatre on Broadway the following year. The Broadway production featured direction by Bill Berry and starred Krysta Rodriguez and Zachary Levi in the leading roles. 

In the years that followed, First Date enjoyed several successful runs in countries as varied as Japan, Argentina, Australia and Russia. The Argentina production was particularly successful, winning multiple Hugo Awards, Florencio Sanchez Awards and Trinidad Guevara Awards.
