Garzon-Montano was born in 1989 in Brooklyn and found a love for music watching his mother perform at the New York City Opera and with Phillip Glass’ ensemble. At twelve years old he learned drums, piano and guitar, going on to join the funk band Mokaad while studying at SUNY Purchase.
In 2014 Garzon-Montano released his first EP, Bishoune: Alma del Huila. The release caught the attention of Stones Throw Records, through which he would release his debut album Jardin in 2017. Garzon-Montano then enjoyed a significant boost in exposure when he was invited by Lenny Kravitz to open the artist’s European stadium tour.
Garzon-Montano’s biggest break came when his songs were sampled by rapper Drake on If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award, and Garzon-Montano’s fanbase grew rapidly as a result. He has since made appearances at festivals like South by Southwest, and in 2021 received the Libera Award for Best Latin Record.
