Formed by Leeds University students Jon King and Andy Gill in 1976, the band was championed by Radio 1 DJ John Peel and early singles 'Damaged Goods' and 'At Home He's a Tourist' led to debut album Entertainment! (1979) becoming a cult classic.

Fans embraced the band's controversial lyrics that pushed against conformity and social norms of the time as heard in the song 'Anthrax'. Their single 'I Love a Man in Uniform' was banned by the BBC because it was deemed inappropriate as war broke out in the Falklands. They released their sophomore album, Solid Gold, in 1981 which featured politically driven singles 'He'd Send in the Army', 'In The Ditch' and 'Cheeseburger'. After a change in the band's lineup, Gang of Four released its third studio album Songs of the Free in 1982.

They split after the release of their fourth studio album Hard in 1983 but reformed for the more synth-driven Mall (1991) and Shrinkwrapped (1995) and released their seventh studio album, Content, in 2011 which saw the band return to its original sound from the 70s. The band continued to release albums including What Happens Next (2015), Complicit (2018) and Happy Now (2019). Founding member Andy Gill died on 1st February 2020, aged 64, and is noted as one of the most influential figures in the post-punk scene.
