The Portuguese men’s professional football team Grupo Desportivo Estoril Praia, usually called just Estoril, was formed in the city of Estoril on May 17, 1939. The club plays in the Primeira Liga, which is the top level of football in the Portuguese system. Home games are played at the Estadio Antonio Coimbra da Mota, which can seat 8,015.

The club was originally called Grupo Desportivo Estoril Plage and started play in the Campeonato de Lisboa, composed of the team in Lisbon. The team also was part of the Taca de Portugal, playing in the finals for the Taca de Portugal in the 1943-44 season.

The club first played in the Primeira Liga in 1944-1945, staying in the top division for only one season before being relegated to Segunda Liga for one season and then staying at Primeira Liga until being relegated in the 1952-1953 season.

The team has won multiple second division titles, the first of which was in the 1941-1942 season. Other championships the team has won include the AF Lisbon First Division, winning their first title in the 1968-1969 season capturing the Liga intercalar for the first time in the 2009-2010 season.
