Born in Riverside in 1989, Mills showed an interest in music at a young age. He began learning to play guitar at five years old, and as a teenager formed a number of small punk rock bands. He attracted his first serious attention as a young man when he uploaded his songs to Myspace in the late 2000s. His efforts would see him signed to Uprising Records in 2008.
In the 2010s the artist took a turn toward hip hop music, garnering acclaim for his 2011 mixtape Leaving Home. Mills received a nod for the Best New Artist Award at MTVU’s Woodie Awards. After a number of further releases, Mills founded the pop-rock duo Girlfriends with fellow musician Nick Gross in 2020. The pair released their self-titled debut album later that year, which earned praise for its vintage sound in the vein of 5 Seconds of Summer and Blink-182.
