Born in 1955 in Irvington, N.J., Burtnik found a passion for music as a boy. He learned to play guitar, bass and piano as a young man, then rose to prominence following his role as Paul McCartney in the Broadway production of Beatlemania. As a songwriter for other artists, he wrote a slew of chart-topping hits including “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough,” “Spirit of a Boy, Wisdom of a Man,” and “Delicious Surprise (I Believe It).” 

Following the reunion of Styx in 1990, Burtnik replaced Tommy Shaw as lead guitarist. He contributed heavily to the group’s album Edge of the Century, writing their hits “Love Is the Ritual” and “Love at First Sight.” He recorded Cyclorama with the band in 2003 before leaving the following year.
