The band began with Sammey Duet and Zak Nolan getting together, after the breakup of Acid Bath, and making a few demos under the name Killgore. After recording a few demos, the band began to take shape in 1998. Lous Benjamin Falgoust II joined a lead vocalist, as well as the guitarist Ben Stout and bassist Pat Burders. This version of the band released their first official demo Serenades to the Tides of Blood. In 2000 the band dropped their first full-length studio album The Eclipse of Ages into Black and their sophomore album Funeral Dirge for the Rotting Sun in 2003. At this point, Goatwhore switched labels from Noise to Metal Blade and Zack Simmons replaced Nolan on drums.
2006 saw the release of A Haunting Curse. These three albums earned Goatwhore a premier spot at Ozzfest in 2008 and 2010. After their first stint at Ozzfest, they released Carving Out the Eyes of God and toured with the likes of Suffocation, Thy Will Be Done, Obituary, and DevilDriver. The single “(Don’t Need) Religion” from their fifth album Blood for the Master received critical acclaim in 2011. Constricting Rage of the Merciless saw members change when Robert Coleman joined as bassist.
