He attended McGill University in Montreal with the intention of becoming a teacher. While in Montreal, he spent a lot of time DJing shows. Eventually, he dropped out of college and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career. In 2015, he began releasing music under the moniker Grandson. He chose this name after his grandfather, with whom he was very close, passed away. Benjamin has said that he chose a name that would give his fans a feeling of nostalgia. His music crosses borders between genres and eras. Some of his musical influences include Bob Marley, Kurt Cobain and John Lennon. His early singles, "Bills", "Things Change" and "Bury Me Face Down" received millions of streams on music platforms. He released the songs "Best Friends" and "Kiss Bang" with RCA Records in 2017. A year later, he signed with the record label Fueled By Ramen and released the hit "Blood // Water.”

It was his first single to make it on the Billboard charts, peaking at 19 on the US Hot Rock chart and 20 on the US Alternative Airplay chart.  "Blood // Water" became the lead single on his first EP, A Modern Tragedy Vol. 1, which was released in June 2018. In 2019, he won the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) Songwriting Prize for “Blood // Water.” He also released his second and third EPs, A Modern Tragedy Vol. 2 and Vol. 3, in 2019. His first full-length album, Death Of An Optimist, is expected to be released in late 2020. It features the single “Riptide,” which was co-produced by Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda.
