Great Southern was originally formed by Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers Band while they were on hiatus in the 1970s. Betts released a solo album called Dickey Betts & Great Southern in 1977 with fellow musicians “Dangerous Dan” Toler, Tom Broome, Ken Tibbets, Jerry Thompson and Donnie Sharbono. It included “Bougainvillea” which was co-written by actor Don Johnson.

This iteration of the group was formed in 2000. They rehearsed, recorded and toured off and on for nearly two decades before doing some special reunion shows in 2018 and 2019 that sold out in New York City. 

In 2023, Great Southern reunited more officially with Betts’ blessing to carry on his legacy and that of the Allman Brothers Band. The group, which is now fronted by Lee Roy Parnell, was hand-selected by Betts and features several experienced musicians and friends of the original band. They will play hits from Betts’ entire decorated career which covered the bluegrass, country and Western genres.
