Lieberum entered the Reno Jazz Festival and Competition while a senior in high school, capturing first place in the Jazz Vocal Solo category. She met bassist Mike Cruz while studying at UC Santa Cruz and together the two formed the funk band Super Sauce, which also featured her college friend actress and comedian Maya Rudolph, which she had previously worked with the Prince cover band Princess. The group released their self-titled debut album Super Sauce in 1995. Their follow-up album Keep On Keepin’ On was released in 1998 with Lieberum handling vocal duties by herself after Rudolph left the group.
