Born in West Marin in 1980, Harris was raised in a commune inspired by the philosophy of Russian spiritual teacher George Gurdjieff. The commune was known as The Group, from which Harrin takes her stage name. She fell in love with music listening to her father’s contemporary classical and Eastern European folk records.

As a young woman, Harris moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career, releasing her debut album Grouper in 2005. She would break through to mainstream attention, however, with the release of her 2008 album Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill. Publications like Pitchfork and AllMusic raved about the album’s dreamy, ambient style of pop. Harris has since collaborated with artists such as Tiny Vipers, Xela and Roy Montgomery, and has given celebrated appearances at events like the Club Transmediale Festival and Le Guess Who? Festival.
