In a 2020 The Washington Post article, writer-director Robert O’Hara (Slave Play) comments on how historically there are not “black and brown bodies in a musical set in the late 19th century.” He also commented on how people usually think of black and brown people and have only slavery and civil rights come to mind, not much else.
