In two acts, the story within the story has two characters, Bud Davenport and Doug Simon, taking on all the roles within the musical as well as in the play. Doug and Bud discover a minimal amount of knowledge on Gutenberg and instead spin their project as a hilarious work of historical fiction. The original production featured Brown and King as the sole cast members. A limited-run reprisal of the musical is scheduled for the fall of 2023, starring Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells, who previously starred together in the Broadway debut of The Book of Mormon.
King and Scott previously worked together to write the Beetlejuice book, based on the hit 1988 movie. Following its run, Gutenberg! The Musical received several nominations in 2007 including Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Book of a Musical and Outstanding Direction of a Musical and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical.
