The HAECO Invitational Tournament started on December 28, 1976, when the Greensboro Sports Council had an idea to bring the high school basketball teams of Greensboro together for a holiday competition. The original name of the tournament then was the Little 4 Invitational. The proceeds of the tournament would be donated back to the participating schools. That first tournament was able to donate $5,000 back to each of the four participating high schools. Today, not only are proceeds donated back to the participating schools, but the Greensboro Sports Council also awards the Bill Lee Scholarship to four participating athletes every year. Charitable donations are also made to various local charities.

The original idea has grown into an invitational tournament that now invites different schools each year, with the only stipulation being the schools are in Guilford County. While there are 34 high schools in Guilford County, only eight teams are invited to the tournament. While the original tournament only involved boy's basketball, today there is both boy's and girl’s basketball included in the HAECO Invitational.
