The production was first composed in 1891 and had its world premiere in 1893 in the Hofttheater in Weimar. Since its earliest staging, it is now often considered to be a holiday classic.
The opera is completed in three acts and follows a similar storyline to the original fairy tale. When their father, a broom-maker, returns home as a drunk, the children are sent out into the woods by their mother to pick strawberries. However, they, unfortunately, get lost on the way and stumble upon a gingerbread house that’s inhabited by a witch. Once they’re lured into her house, they must find a way to outsmart her and escape before they’re cooked alive.
