Ian Craig Marsh and Martyn Ware were both members of Sheffield band Human League but split to concentrate on the then relative new pop innovations of synths and Linn drum machines, recruiting Glenn Gregory as lead singer. Their 1982 debut album Penthouse And Pavement was a bold expression of dance-pop, including their classic first single (We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang. Ware and Marsh also developed a formidable reputation as cutting edge pop producers, operating under the name B.E.F., notably releasing Music Of Quality And Distinction featuring various artists, including Glenn Gregory, Tina Turner, Paula Yates, Billy Mackenzie and Bernadette Nolan.
In 1983 they had a major hit with Temptation, featuring singer Carol Kenyon, which helped the sales of their second album The Luxury Gap. However, they had less success through the 1990s but continued to work until Ian Marsh's departure in 2006 and were back on the road in 2008 with singer Billie Godfrey.
