Enjoy the last of Stephen Sondheim’s works with Here We Are tickets. The musical, Here We Are, features music composed by Sondheim (West Side Story, Sweeney Todd) with the book written by David Ives (Venus in Fur, Ancient History). The musical had been worked on since 2014 and after Sondheim’s death, was completed in 2023. Initially known as Square One, Here We Are made its premiere in September 2023 at the Griffin Theater of The Shed in New York City. The idea of Here We Are was inspired by The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel, two films by Spanish-Mexican filmmaker, Luis Buñuel. In a 2021 interview with The New York Times, shortly before his death, Sondheim had described how the characters “run into all kinds of strange and surreal things” and how in the second act “they find a place to have dinner, but they can’t get out.”
Here We Are was directed by Joe Mantello, a Tony Award-winning director. Mantello received two awards for direction on works like Take Me Out (2003) and Assassins (2004) and has been nominated for directing and acting by the Outer Critics Circle and the Emmys. Here We Are features a cast made up of talents like Francois Battiste, Micaela Diamond, Tracie Bennet and Steven Pasquale. Any fan of Stephen Sondheim should get their Here We Are tickets and avoid missing out on witnessing his final work live.
