Members of the Irish community in Edinburgh founded the club in 1875, naming it after the Roman word for Ireland. The club began to make noise as a football club in the 1880s, winning the Scottish Cup in 1887. The club joined the Scottish Football League in 1893 and was promoted to First Division in 1895.
