In 1972 she founded the Redwood Record label, which supports artists engaged in political activism. As Near’s reputation as a folk singer grew, she worked with a number of high-profile musicians including Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez and Harry Belafonte. She has received awards for her activism from the ACLU, National Organization for Women and National Lawyers Guild.
