Her time with the quartet developed her desire to become an activist, and she later worked with multiple anti-war groups including Another Mother for Peace. 

Near then studied theatre at UCLA, beginning her professional career in 1969 with a role on Mod Squad. The following year she was cast in the Broadway production of Hair, then through the rest of the early ‘70s performed on the Free the Army Tour as a singer in protest of the war in Vietnam. In 1972 she founded the Redwood Record label, which supports artists engaged in political activism. As Near’s reputation as a folk singer grew, she worked with a number of high-profile musicians including Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez and Harry Belafonte. She has received awards for her activism from the ACLU, National Organization for Women and National Lawyers Guild.
