Tenor Nicholas Phan will examine the realities and myths of the United States being the “melting pot” through a solo performance of Nico Muhly’s “Stranger.”

The entire song cycle was composed by Phan himself. During his solo, he recalls the accounts of Ellis island immigration and protests regarding the Chinese Exclusion policies at that time. Meanwhile, Angela M. Farr Schiller, PhD will take a deep dive into the themes of social politics in Ragtime with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Whether you’re a history buff, classical music aficionado, or simply love the musical, Immersion tickets are just the thing for you.

Ragtime is based on the 1975 novel by E.L. Doctorow and features intertwined stories of three groups of people living in the United States during the earth 20th Century. The story spotlights what life is like for Eastern European immigrants, African Americans in Harlem, and an upper-class white family. The purpose of recreating the music from the musical in concert is to confront history’s timeless contradictions of poverty and wealth, hope and despair, and freedom and prejudice.
