Iron Butterfly was first formed in San Diego, Calif., in 1966 with a crew of musicians who began as rivals. An original lineup consisting of Doug Ingle (vocals, organ), Danny Weis (guitar), Greg Willis (bass) and Jack Pinney (drums) started playing clubs around Hollywood like the Whisky a Go-Go. The band made their first full-length album release in 1968 entitled Heavy through Atco Records.
The sound of the group has morphed over time as different lineups have taken to the stage to revive Iron Butterfly tickets. However, their sweet classic rock style was fully established with the release of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” the single and title track of the group’s second album released in 1968. An RIAA gold disc, the album exceeded three million copies sold by 1970 and eventually grew to more than 30 million sold. Iron Butterfly has toured with numerous great acts through the years like Jefferson Airplane, Yes and Black Oak Arkansas. The group released their last studio album in 1975 but continues to go on reunion tours.
