She was born in Sainte-Felicite in 1972 and studied literature at Cegep Limoilou. During her studies, her friends registered Boulay for a singing contest, where she met her future agent. Encouraged by the positive reception her singing received, Boulay performed at the 1990 Petite-Vallee Festival, winning an award for her rendition of “Les Gens de Mon Pays.”

Boulay went on to win a slew of further competitions, and in 1993 sang on behalf of Radio Canada for France’s Truffe de Perigueux Festival. Her performance caught the eye of songwriter Luc Plamondon, who recruited Boulay for his rock opera Starmania. While performing in the opera she released her debut album Fallait Pas but broke through to mainstream success with her sophomore album Etats D’amour. Etats D’amour would be certified gold, reaching the top of the French charts and earning Boulay four separate Felix Award nominations. In 1999 she would win the Felix Award for Female Singer of the Year. Boulay has also appeared on television on La Voix, where she coached contestants for three seasons.
