He was a noted actor in the late 1950s and 1960s as well as a popular singing star. Darren grew up aspiring to be an actor and was a student of Stella Adler in New York City. He was discovered by Joyce Setznick, who saw his photographs. He was signed to a long-term contract with Columbia in 1956. His debut film was the “B” movie Rumble on the Docks in 1956.

This would be a launching point of his career, leading him to a string of successful singles, playing teen idols on television and starring in a Gidget sequel.
