Hval was born in Tvedestrand in 1980, showing musical promise from a very young age. At nineteen she led one of her first bands, the gothic metal group Shellyz Raven. Hval then studied performance and creative writing at the University of Melbourne, and during her time there released the 2004 EP Are You Afraid of Heights? with Thomas McGowan’s band Folding for Air.
Two years later Hval returned to Norway to pursue a solo career. She released her EP Cigars in 2006, which earned a nod for the Norwegian Grammy Award for Best Newcomer. Hval achieved international attention with the release of Apocalypse, Girl in 2015, which established her avant-garde pop/folk style and received unanimous praise from critics for its hypnotizing yet thought-provoking sound.
Hval’s follow-up album Blood B*tch, a concept piece influenced by retro horror films, won the 2017 Phonofile Nordic Music Prize. The artist has often been compared to her primary influences Laurie Anderson and Kate Bush.
