Sykes grew up in Pound Ridge, New York. She bought her first guitar when she was 12 years old, enthralled by the music of Lynrd Skynrd. After college, Sykes moved briefly to New York City, and then settled in Seattle, Washington in 1990 and began performing with bands, such as Hominy, with ex-husband Jim Sykes. Hominy released one self-titled album in 1998.

The band’s debut album was Reckless Burning, released in 2003. The band toured extensively, spending much time in Europe, where it first experienced success. Sykes has also collaborated with artists such as providing vocals on Tomo Nakayama’s “I Am Waiting,” which was on the compilation album I Saved Latin! A Tribute to Wes Anderson. Her music has been featured on movie soundtracks and on the HBO show True Blood.
