Raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as an only child by a single mother her upbringing was as a Jehovah’s Witness. After graduating from Philadelphia High School for Girls, she attended Temple University while working two jobs. Scott has originally planned on becoming an English teacher but dropped out of college after three years. Scott began her performing career by attending spoken word poetry readings and was eventually discovered by Ahmir Thompson of the Roots. Soon after meeting Scott was in the recording studio with the group and recorded “You Got Me” featuring Erykah Badu and won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for the song. Scott also began opening up for the Roots while they were on tour. Jill has collaborated with some of the most influential artists in the industry including Common, Eric Benet, and Will Smith and has also toured Canada for the production of the Broadway musical Rent.

Scott was the first artist signed to Steve McKeever’s Hidden Beach Recording label under which her debut album was released Who is Jill Scott? which was met with some success on the music charts with singles like “A Long Walk” and earning another Grammy nomination for Best Female Performance which she did not win she did, however, earn her second Grammy when she collaborated with George Benson and Al Jarreau on the single “God Bless The Child” for Traditional R&B Vocal Performance. Scott was sued by the Hidden Beach record label for leaving halfway through her six-album contract and for millions worth of damages. Scott has had her share of film and television appearances including the Showtime movie Cave Dwellers starring Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. Her first film appearance occurred in 2007 when she played Big Mama Thorton in Tyler Perry’s movie, Why Did I Get Married? she has also appeared on multiple television shows on the VH1 network including Storytellers. Her last studio album was Woman in 2015 since then Scott has toured and still performs to this day.
