Jockstrap was founded in London in 2018 as a way for Ellery to pursue a style of music different from that of her previously successful band Black Country, New Road. In the years that followed, Jockstrap garnered a significant following in and around London, and in 2020 was signed to the Warp Records label.
At the end of 2020, Jockstrap released their critically acclaimed EPs Wicked City and Beavercore. Wicked City in particular attracted the attention of critics, in large part due to its sophisticated musicianship and defiance of genre conventions.
