In High School, she was voted as the best dancer by her fellow classmates and Ebony Magazine claimed her as one of the most popular dancers in the show that she starred in. Watley’s music interests tend to stay geared toward pop, R&B, jazz, dance, and electronic soul. In the 1970s, she joined a funk and R&B band named “Shalamar.” Three of their most famous singles included “The Second Time Around”, “For The Lover In You”, and “A Night To Remember.”

Shortly after her time with “Shalamar”, she moved to England where she performed with a reggae group named “Musical Youth.” Two years later she moved back to America and secured a record deal with MCA Records. She released her debut solo album in 1987 and it was named “Jody Watley.” Her lead single, “Looking for a New Love”, was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. She won the Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 30th Annual Grammy Awards. Jody was also recognized as the Crossover Music Icon Honoree by the 2017 Black Music Honors TV.
