He is most known for his production work, as he has produced three Grammy Award-winning albums. Henry was born in 1960 in Charlotte and found a love for music as a teenager. After moving to Brooklyn in 1985, he gave his first performances at local bars and clubs.
Once he had gotten his start with a year of live performances, John Henry released his debut album Talk of Heaven. The album was a success, and the young artist’s talent saw him signed to A&M Records later that year. He released a slew of albums through the label in the 90s, establishing his signature sound in the budding alternative country genre. Henry’s soulful yet catchy rhythms began to get used on television, in particular on the hit show The Sopranos.
In the early 2000s, Henry produced Solomon Burke’s album Don’t Give Up on Me, which won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. On the back of this success, Henry opened up a home studio and began producing further, even composing the score for the film Knocked Up.
