Rivers met James Burton who recommended his song, “I’ll Make Believe”, to Ricky Nelson who wanted to record it. Throughout the recording process, Rivers found work as a studio musician at a nightclub in Hollywood. He played a jazz combo there where he gained instant popularity with the crowd. Rivers was offered a one-year contract with Elmer Valentine to open at the Whisky a Go-Go, on Sunset Strip in West Hollywood.
