The British-Congolese musician was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo and moved with his mother to London when he was just one year old. By the time he was 12 years old, Mackampa had begun writing songs and playing guitar and as a teen began recording music at the local youth center. He would go on to study music at the University of Northampton and develop his musical style out of inspirations like Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers.
The soulful singer-songwriter self-released his debut EP, Physics, in 2016 featuring one of his popular songs “Yours to Keep” which has amassed over 35 million plays on Spotify alone. He began touring and the following year released a follow-up EP, Tales from the Broken, and its lead single “Battlecry” was featured on the British series Our Girl as well as popular advertisements with Levi’s and Intel. The same year, Mackampa signed a deal with AWAL Recordings and released his debut album, Foreigner, in 2020 which deals heavily with the experiences of being a Congolese immigrant in England. In 2021 the singer’s soulful songs “Peace by Peace” and “Alibi” were released on his EP, Come Around.
