Jordan Rudess is a keyboardist, composer and songwriter from New York most known for his work with the progressive metal band Dream Theater. Born in Great Neck in 1956, Rudess had begun training in classical piano by the second grade. At nine years old he entered the Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division, but in his teens turned away from classical piano and toward progressive rock music.
In the late 70s and early 80s, Rudess served as a session musician for a number of high-profile groups including Speedway Boulevard, Ram Jam and The Ohio Express. The pianist garnered his first serious attention when in 1994 he was voted Keyboard Magazine’s Best New Talent. The success caught the eye of The Dixie Dregs, who recruited Rudess to join their group and toured with him widely in the coming years.
In 1997 Rudess joined the progressive rock supergroup Liquid Tension Experiment, with whom he garnered attention from Dream Theater, which he later joined. Rudess would go on to become the band’s full-time keyboardist, contributing to over ten albums.
