The members are Will Butera, Blaise O’Brien, Tyndall, Arthur Shea and Sachi DeSerafino. The band formed in the early 2010s after the members met at a boogie boarding competition. They began collaborating online and before long had begun to record their first album.
In 2014 Joy Again released their debut LP Forever, which established their DIY garage rock sound and tendency to create larger-than-life soundscapes. The band received positive reviews for their versatility, as they dabbled in instrumental tracks and minimalist vocals as well as hard-hitting grooves and traditional indie rock singing. In 2015 Joy Again released their hit single “Looking Out For You,” which remains one of their most popular pieces.
By 2017 the band had taken a turn toward slower, heavier fare reminiscent of groups like Crumb. Their eponymous EP from that year is the best evidence of this, in particular on their critically acclaimed song “Necromancer.” “Necromancer” earned rave reviews for its minimalist instrumentation and haunting vocals.
