The son of reggae legend Bob Marley, Julian Marley also fills his own music with the roots-reggae grooves and Rastafarian spirituality and has been keeping his father's legacy alive touring with his brothers since the late 1980s. Born in London and spending his childhood in both England and the Caribbean, Marley was just five years old when his father died, yet he had already recorded his first song and soon began teaching himself guitar, drums and keyboards.
He picked up advice and took inspiration from his father's former bandmates in The Wailers, but the murder of drummer Carlton Barrett in 1987 had a profound effect on Julian, and he wrote his first two songs about the shooting, fully adopting the Rastafarian teachings at the age of 12. By the age of 17 he had settled in Jamaica and founded the Ghetto Youths Foundation with his brothers in order to help underprivileged children, and after setting up his own group called The Uprising and touring the US with his brothers, his debut album 'Lion in the Morning' in 1996 was full of loose, uptempo reggae riddims and earnest, righteous zeal.
Marley went on to perform at the Lollapalooza festival tour in the US with his brother Damien and played guitar on Lauryn Hill's hugely successful 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' album, before returning to Tuff Gong studios in Jamaica to work on the 'Chant Down Babylon' project which brought together superstars like Erykah Badu, Chuck D and Aerosmith to re-work classic Bob Marley and The Wailers hits.
His second solo album 'A Time & Place' in 2003 remained loyal to reggae's roots but also included wandering, jazzy jams and neo-soul lullabies, and he participated in a historic 'Africa Unite' gig in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to honor his father's 60th birthday in 2005, also performing at the Beijing Olympics to celebrate sprinter Usain Bolt's gold medal success.
His brothers Stephen and Damien and Lost Boyz rapper Mr. Cheeks appeared on his third album 'Awake' in 2009, which turned out to be his biggest success and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. After a decade without releasing any new material, Marley returned in 2018 with 'As I Am', featuring collaborations with Shaggy and Beenie Man. The demand for Julian Marley tickets speaks to a trend of world music artists reaching a growing audience.
