Originally, the Kangaroo nickname dates back to the 1930s, when the debate team wanted to honor the addition of two baby kangaroos to the Kansas City Zoo. The University of Missouri-Kansas City sponsors roughly 16 varsity teams that are members of the Summit League. Previously, the school competed in the WAC.

The KC Roos men’s basketball team played its inaugural season in 1954. From that time and until the 1987-88 season, Kansas City played at the NAIA level. Their only appearance in the NAIA Tournament occurred in 1977. It was a short stay in the tournament as the Roos lost to Grand Valley State, 88-94. The KC Roos basketball team enjoyed their first NCAA Division I postseason basketball tournament in 2017. Kansas City was invited to the College Basketball Invitational and secured a first-round win against Green Bay. They eventually fell to Wyoming in the quarterfinals, 61-72.

Women’s college basketball fans should look for Kansas City Roos tickets throughout the winter season. The women’s basketball team enjoyed more success in the NAIA, appearing in multiple tournaments. They even made it to the Third Place game against Portland in the 1983 NAIA Tournament. The Roos enjoyed one of their best seasons in 2019-20 when they notched 21 wins and a first-place finish in the WAC.
